The month of February is the most eagerly awaited vacation of the year in the Dominican Republic. Carnaval is the largest and most colourful event that occurs among all the other holidays. In Santiago, the Carnival first began in 1867. This is a special time when Dominicans attend parties, take part in parades, wear outfits, go dancing in the street, drink and eat and have lots of fun with neighbors and tourists alike.

Each Sun. in Feb Carnival occurs in la Vega, Monte Cristi, Santo Domingo and San Cristobal. On occasions people can go OTT with these celebrations. As a part of the large parties, folks get dressed in colourful costumes and masks and hit each other with inflated pig and cow bladders. In Santo Domingo, in the week of Carnival, there are multitudes of nearly 100,000 folk. This would be a superb time to line up one of those holidays to Dominican Republic to catch the convention of Carnival week!

The most commonly recognized mask of the Carnival, which is named the Diablo Cojuelo Mask, had its origins in Santo Domingo and La Vega. The tradition of the Carnaval called "Puerto Plata" is that the Diablo Cojuelo, or horned demon, lashes out at all who take a role in this event with an inflated cow bladder in order to purge the sins from the viewers.

There are several parties that occur throughout the year in the country of the Dominican Republic. Visitors are always warmly welcomed to perform a part in these holidays. This Caribbean country is mythical for its music and colorful festivals that attract visitors from every part of the world.
